It all started with a simple question from a client
at Joe’s surgery;
‘Can I cook a healthy meal for my dog at home?’
Being a practical kind of chap, Joe decided that there was only one way to answer this question – and that was by getting his hands (and kitchen) dirty and seeing if he could use his veterinary knowledge to come up with some truly healthy and tasty recipes for pets that could be cooked at home.
After much research, a lot of trial and error, and one or two culinary disasters, the first of Joe’s recipes began to take shape. Patients at the surgery soon became taste-testers and before long, Joe’s recipe book was becoming remarkably successful.
It was at about this point, with Joe’s kitchen bubbling over with such delicacies as ‘Nine-lives nosh’ for cats and ‘Liver dumplings’ for dogs, that lady luck played her part, and Joe bumped into a friend of a friend who was just launching a new pet food company, Pets’ Kitchen. Together they realised that Joe’s recipes could be used to create a range of totally healthy complete diets for dogs and cats – which is exactly what they’ve gone and done!
Of course that’s not quite the full story. As the old saying goes, ‘behind every successful man is a troublesome kitten and playful dog’ – and that’s certainly the case with Joe. Jack the Spaniel x Collie, who came from the Dog’s Trust rescue centre in Evesham, has been a key member of the Pets’ Kitchen team – tasting the foods, approving the designs, and keeping Joe in shape by taking him out for regular walks! And Jill the cat has played her part too – mainly causing trouble of some kind, but occasionally coming up with a great idea along the way!
