Treats

Tuna and Marmite Milkshake

Now many of my cat recipes might sound quite tasty – but not this one! The idea of mixing fish, Marmite and milk together really makes my stomach turn – but cats (and possibly some pregnant women), think this is a dreamy combination. Just hold your nose and mix this up and watch how quickly your cat gulps it down - and if you happen to be pregnant, you never know, you might just love it!

Health-wise, it’s not bad, as the tuna provides some high-quality protein and essential fatty acids, and the Marmite gives a good shot of B vitamins. There is a touch too much salt to make this an everyday treat, and cow’s milk can upset some cats which don’t cope with lactose well, so use this for special occasions, especially in the summer when it’s great served ice cold.

For one super-sized kitty shake (enough for 3-4 cat servings), you’ll need:

  • A tin of tuna
  • ½ pint (250ml) milk
  • ½ teaspoon Marmite

Simply blend it all together to form a thick milkshake. Serve slightly warmed in the winter, or straight from the fridge in the summer.

Chicken and Catnip Jelly

Jelly is the mainstay of a children’s party, but it’s not just kids who like the wobbly texture of jelly – some cats will go crazy for it! And rather than upsetting the children by feeding their party food to the cat, you can make up this special chicken jelly just for Puss. It’s much healthier than the sweet variety the kids love, and the taste is much more suited to the feline palate than raspberry or lemon!

This recipe makes a pint of jelly – enough for a whole party of cats – so halve the quantities if you’ve just got one or two cats:

  • 1 chicken drumstick
  • 1 small carrot
  • 1 stock cube
  • ½ teaspoon catnip
  • 1 tablespoon gelatine

Boil up the chicken and chopped carrot in enough water to comfortably cover them. Add in the stock cube and simmer for about half an hour, and then remove the carrot and chicken from the water and put them to one side.

Pour about 100ml or ¼ pint of the broth into a mixing bowl and add in the gelatine, mix thoroughly and then top up to a pint (450ml) with the broth and add the catnip.
