Everyday Meals

Jack's Chicken and Rice

The inspiration behind Joe & Jack’s Chicken and Rice diet, this dish combines one of the healthiest proteins available – chicken – with rice which is an easily digestible carbohydrate and a mixture of veg which provide lots of vitamins and minerals. It’s great for all dogs, including those with sensitive digestions and older dogs.

And it’s ideal for freezing, so you can store it in single-serving sized bags. Then you can simply de-frost a tasty and healthy meal the next time you want to give the dog something special.

The basic ingredients to make enough for several big meals are:

  • 450g chicken mince
  • 1 cup of rice (preferably brown)
  • 1 large carrot
  • 1 courgette
  • 1 tsp Marmite or other yeast extract

Boil the rice in a large pan of water according to the instructions on the packet. While this is bubbling away, grate the veg as finely as you can and leave to one side.

Then warm up a large saucepan and add the chicken mince. Fry it over a gentle heat for 5-7 minutes until it is cooked through and brown on the outside. You shouldn’t need to add any oil as there is plenty of fat in the mince.

When the rice is almost cooked (1-2 minutes away), drop the grated veg into the water and let it simmer until the rice is done. This makes the veg much more digestible, without losing all of its goodness.

Then drain away the water, and pour the cooked rice and veg into the saucepan with the turkey in. Mix in the Marmite and stir all the ingredients together.

Allow the mixture to cool and serve with a few of your dogs normal dried kibbles to add a bit of crunchy texture.

Meaty Parsnip Mash

This is one of Jack’s all time favourites – and I must admit to being rather partial to a spoonful myself. It’s full of real meaty chunks which dogs love, as well as plenty of veg for vitamins and cheese for calcium. Not one for the older dog as there’s too much rich protein, but ideal for all other dogs.

The ingredients are:

  • 250g stewing steak, diced *
  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • A couple of medium potatoes (around 350g)
  • A couple of parsnips (around 200g)
  • A carrot
  • ½ teaspoon Marmite
  • 100g grated cheddar cheese

* I like to use the toughest steak I can find for this recipe. Dogs love chewing their food, and it helps keep their teeth clean as well. Just watch your own teeth if you try a bit!

The first step is to get a big pan of water on to boil while you chop up all the veg. Wash them to get rid of any nasty chemicals, but don’t peel them as this removes a lot of the goodness. Put all of the veg in together and let it simmer for about 15 minutes – until it’s all quite soft.

Meanwhile, fry up the diced steak in the oil. Don’t worry about cooking it all the way through – dogs love rare meat.

When the veg is done, drain off the water and set about it with a masher until you’ve got a thick mash in the pan. Then mix in the Marmite, cheese and fried steak. Mix it all together and then let it cool. Serve on it’s own or mixed in with some dried biscuits.

Joe & Jack's Stew

This is an easy recipe which uses your dog’s normal Joe & Jack’s biscuits, so it’s fine as an everyday dish. The added meat and veg complement the kibbles really well, and add fresh nutrients as well as extra taste.

To make enough stew for several helpings, you need:

  • 200g Joe & Jack’s
  • 750ml water
  • 250g stewing steak
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 potato

Put the kibble and water into a large saucepan and bring to the boil. Then let it simmer for about twenty minutes. After about ten minutes, start to mash up the softened kibbled with a wooden spoon, and keep going at it until you’ve formed a thick and smooth gravy. Add more water if the mixture is getting too thick.

Meanwhile, dice the steak and veg and cook it in a large pan of boiling water for twenty minutes. When the veg is soft and the meat cooked through, drain off the water, and mix into the kibble gravy.
