Did you know that obesity is the number one preventable health problem affecting our pets nowadays?
With over 30% of all pets now thought to be overweight or obese, the obesity epidemic that’s affecting the human population is also taking its toll on our pets. Changes in lifestyle and more indulgent feeding regimes have led to a dramatic rise in the number of podgy pooches and chubby cats over the last few years – and this has led to an increase in health problems such as arthritis, diabetes and liver disease that are all linked to obesity.
In my surgery I have seen firsthand the effects that obesity can have on the health and wellbeing of pets, with some really tragic cases where pets have lost all quality of life simply through being so overweight. It is particularly distressing as it is such a preventable problem and if we could keep our pets at a healthy weight, we would be able to save so much distress and suffering.
